Donut Country Review
A Sweet Little Time-A Donut Country Review
Donut country was a game I had first played on the Switch a while back and was left utterly delighted with but it had left my mind after a few months. When I saw it land on the PC Xbox gamepass recently I had no reason to boot up this short yet sweet little Indie gem yet again for a review.
A Delightful Little Time
While I don’t want to go into much detail of the story and all its little quirks, just know that the game sees you as a racoon controlling a far off hole in the ground that gets larger the more things you drop into it. The story is simply adorable, with loads of funny little quips of dialog that I wouldn’t want to ruin by going through here. It should be noted that the bulk of the enjoyment you are getting here will be through Donut Country’s gameplay, but the cute little tale is a nice side bonus.
Ben Esposito’s work here with Donut Country represents a Katamari Damacy esque level of game design and satisfaction. I really cannot explain the euphoria of building up a huge hole in the ground and swallowing the entire level in a stream of greatness. However, unlike Katamari, there is no time limit, which actively encourages you to swallow everything and beat the level. As a stress free experience, there aren’t many that do it as well as Donut Country.
Short But Sweet
While Donut country may not be the longest game, that aspect of which is my main issue of the game, it does pack a lot of variety in a small experience. However, I do understand how an experience that can be beaten in around 2.5 hours may be off putting to some for a $13 game. In those two hours though, you’ll find the developers packed all kinds of gimmicks and mechanics into simply dropping things into a hole. Whether it was using hot air to blow up a balloon, filling the hole with water and making a makeshift pond, or flinging snakes across a landscape to set off a snake out looker, Donut Country has surprises around every corner.
Verdict
While it remains relatively short, Donut Country was such a diverse and genuinely stress free experience that I couldn’t recommend it more for anyone up for a relaxing little time.
